Murray's Midnight Madness

Two years ago I had an idea for an unauthorized midnight trail race, run on Groundhog's Day Weekend and designed with competitive obstacles that correspond to internet legends of Bill Murray. Loosely mascotted and based around the Bill Murray Starring, Paramount Pictures seminal classic, "Groundhog's Day" the race would kick off at the stroke of midnight with a reading of Billy Collin's "Another Reason Why I Don't Keep a Gun in the House". After convincing a group of 12 of my closest (or stupidest) friends we took on the cheap-tequila infused quasi-obstacle course in negative degree temps.

A year after the successful inaugural run, the 2nd annual Murray's Midnight Madness kicked off with a fervor. The race started by dodging state police and took participants through iced-over trails, a multitude of navigational errors, and tequila-fueled final sprints.

This year's obstacles included the requisite SXSW inspired tequila shots, gnarly, frozen over streams more suited to ice hockey than midnight running, little to no directional markers, the best costumes to date capped off by pbr chugging and cold pizza.

I'd love to tell you the rest but you'll just have to show up next year to find out.

Blurry pictures taken by me from the hip and on the run, non-blurry pictures probably taken by somebody better than me. (ie. Ben Vanderput or JJ Steigenga)
